A stereo audio power amplifier is an electronic device that improves the sound quality of an audio system or instrument by amplifying the signal from a low level to a high level. So these amplifiers include two output channels that receive stereo o/p signal from some audio device & send it to the connected speakers to the amplifiers. These amplifiers are very popular in different conditions and situations, used at the office or home to amplify the signal from TVs, DVDs, or CD players. Thus, there are various types of stereo audio power amplifier ICs available in the market like; TEA2025 IC, CD4440 IC, TDA2002V, TDA2030A, etc. This article explores about CD4440 IC, pinout, specifications, working, and its applications.
What is CD4440 IC?
The CD4440 stereo audio power amplifier IC and housed in a 14-pin Single In-line Package. It includes two channels where the maximum o/p power of every channel is about 6 watts so, it can provide 6W of output power to the speakers under the correct voltage supply & load impedance conditions.
This IC has an in-built audio muting function and protection circuits that protect from surge voltage, over-voltage, pin-to-pin, and thermal voltage. The max operating voltage of this IC is 18V, the voltage supply is 13.2V & the surge voltage supply is 50V. Thus, this IC has 6Watts of output power in dual mode & 19Wats power in bridge mode. The CD4440 IC is used in a wide range of audio-based applications for bridge and stereo amplification.
Working
The CD4440 IC works in two amplification modes; stereo mode and bridge-push-pull mode. So in stereo mode, this IC provides amplification mainly for the right and left channels separately. Similarly in Bridge-Push-Pull or BTL mode, it connects two channels mainly into amplified single output to provide maximum output power. So this mode is very useful for various applications that need high-volume in-car audio systems.

CD4440 IC Audio Amplifier Circuit
The CD4440 IC audio amplifier circuit with volume control is shown below. This amplifier circuit is designed with some external components that deliver stereo output (6 Watts + 6 Watts) through two 4Ω loudspeakers.
The power supply for this circuit is very significant, by providing suitable bias we can make sure of high gain and high efficiency. So, a 12V/1A power supply is provided to CD4440 IC so that it exhibits high fidelity & low distortion audio reproduction. This IC is suitable in a broad spectrum of audio applications because of the wide frequency response that ranges from 20 Hz to 20 KHz.
He required components to make this circuit include; capacitors like; C5, C6, C7 & C12 100μF/35V, 4.7μF/35V C3 & C4, 220μF/35V C8 & C1, 0.1μF C9 & C11,1000μF/35V C1, 100μF/35V C2, 2KΩ R1 & R2 resistors, LA4440, LEFT1 & RIGHT1 speaker, 12V/1A J1 and J2 screw terminal. Connect this circuit as per the diagram shown below.
Working
This IC needs external capacitors only for its operation and R1, and R2 resistors provide GND balance to the RIGHT and LEF audio input. The electrolytic capacitors are used in this circuit with 35-volt voltage ratings. Here, VCC pin-11 is connected to the +12V power supply whereas the Ground (-) supply is connected to Pins 3, 8 & 14. So the C1 capacitor is used for bias filtering purposes by connecting across the +12V & GND line.
In the above circuit, audio input LEFT is simply connected to the Pin-6 (IN2) through C3 4.7µF capacitor whereas the RIGHT input is connected to the Pin-2 (IN1) through C4 4.7µF capacitor. Similarly, the pin-10 (OUT2) is connected simply to the LEFT speaker whereas the pin-12 (OUT1) is connected to the RIGHT speaker with a 220µF capacitor. So here a 0.1µF capacitor is used for noise filtering by connecting across the loudspeaker terminals.
Finally, by applying bias & input audio voice, we can listen to the 6W+6W amplified audio o/p through two loudspeakers. Thus, this circuit volume can be controlled by introducing two variable resistors within the audio input.
