Asynchronous Counter Question & Answers May 3, 2022 By WatElectronics This article lists 75 Asynchronous Counter MCQs for engineering students. All the Asynchronous Counter Questions & Answers given below include a hint and a link wherever possible to the relevant topic. This is helpful for users who are preparing for their exams, interviews, or professionals who would like to brush up on their fundamentals on Asynchronous Counter. Counters are defined as a number of events or processes that occurred in presence of clock timings. There exist two types of basic counters asynchronous counters and synchronous counters. Counters whose output is unoccupied by applying different clock signals are called Asynchronous counters. The number of logic gates required to design it is very less. The alternative name for asynchronous counters is Ripple counters. Flip flops used in asynchronous/ripple-counters depend upon a number of states of the counter and the output of its states is called Modulus or MOD of the counter. The highest number of states used by the counter is 2n, where n is represented by the number of flip flops used in the counter. Example: If we use 2 Flip flops, then the number of states at the output of the counter is 4. i.e, 2*2=4.It is also called Modulus-4 or MOD-4 Counter. There are many types of Asynchronous/ripple counters like Up counter, Down counter, Ripple Up/Down Counter, and Ripple BCD counter. Up counter: Ripple counter starts the count from 0 to maximum range n. n depends upon the number of FFs used. Ripple Up counter can be built using D and T flip flops. Design differs based on the type of Flip flops used in the circuit. Toggling will be the same in both D and T flip-flops. Down Counter: Ripple Down counter starts the count from the maximum possible range to 0 and resets back from the maximum count. The design is the same as the Up counter the only difference is toggling in D and T flip flops differs. The output of each flip flop will be given as input to succeeding flip flops. So that it activates the counter to count from backward. Up/Down Counter: This counter can do both Up and Down counting based on the type of mode select switch. When the mode switch is high, then the counter will count up whereas when the mode switch is low, then the counter will count down. Here we use 2*1 MUX to select two clock signals. Asynchronous BCD Counter: The Asynchronous BCD Counter is the same as the Asynchronous Up counter, when the count reaches the decade it resets to zero flip flops. 1).
